Why does everyone hate voiceover?

It's a viewpoint brilliantly mocked by Charlie Kaufman in 'Adaptation' but why so often do we see the advice to avoid voiceover as if it's some sort of script virus that will destroy your film?

Why does everyone hate voiceover? Does everyone hate voiceover, is that a myth in itself? What are your thoughts, have you used it, do you like using it?

That's got to be enough question to get some thoughts going.
